The email that inspired me . . .

So in my original post, I told you I received an email from a retired Marine.  I thought I'd share some of the excerpts with you - interesting things to think about!

Here it is:

Did you see that Diane Sawyer special report a while ago? They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA .
There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they showed truckloads of items - USA made - being brought in to replace everything and talked about how to find these items and the difference in price etc..
It was interesting that Diane said that if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like 200,000 new jobs!
A FRIEND PURCHASED FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT WALMART and THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS  SAID 'FROM CHINA ’

FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF  MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS 'FROM CHINA  '

SHE WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS
SHE PURCHASED THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIF.

Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think while the Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets?

70% of Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.

Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA !!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.

THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!

Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on July 1st  and continue it until August 1st. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.

Remember,  JULY 1 - August 1.

START NOW.

Share this with every one you know. Let's show them that we are Americans and NOBODY can take us for granted.

  1. CK this suggestion has been around the Internet since windows 95. No one in their right mind would disagree with this suggestion and the impact it would have. Even if only 500 thousand people refused to buy a particular type of product one day a month the impact would be 6 million less products sold.
Clearly what you propose is powerful stuff no denying that. But like I said this suggestion has been around almost as long as the Internet. The trick is finding a reason/motivation to get a group to act together. It would have to be a 1st grade simple plan. When someone comes up with a plan like that the group that acts on that plan will be a force to reckon with. CK are you that someone?

  2. Anonymous - thanks for your post! Well, it's good to hear this thought via this email has had such a long shelf life (I don't know how since this email doesn't require you to "send to 20 people or bad luck will befall you!").
I have been fortunate in my lifetime to see change occur with one person planting the seed so to speak - seatbelt use, powerful "don't drink and drive" messaging and of course the big one, smoking becoming taboo.
While of course I have no idea if I'm that "someone" I consider it a success if a few more people are looking at labels or choosing "made in America" than was the case prior to the blog's birth.
Any ideas on what the "trick" is to motivate people to act? For example, are you prepared to share a link to this blog to your friends and/or colleagues to introduce them to this conversation or encourage them to begin to look at labels?
    Keep it coming Anonymous!
PS - the means by which you tell time in your post is interesting - 'has been around since Windows 95' - vs. saying "for years" or "almost 20 years". Are you in the technology field? If so, you've got tremendous means to encourage people to join in the conversation and again, I certainly hope you do!
